Bird Box, the wildly popular new Netflix film adaptation of the Josh Malerman novel by the same name, has earned a place in internet history by achieving the peak of pop culture prestige: it inspired a meme.
The film’s main characters live in a world filled with monsters the sight of which makes humans kill themselves, so they protect themselves by wearing blindfolds when they go out. Naturally, the film’s fans—and then the entire internet—challenged themselves to go about their day in blindfolds.
The Bird Box Challenge, like the cinnamon challenge and the Tide Pod challenge before it, is sweeping the nation—often at the expense of public safety. A 17-year-old girl in Layton, Utah, for instance, took on the challenge while driving, pulling her hat down over her eyes and inevitably crashing into another car.
It should go without saying that you should never drive without being able to see. Both the Bird Boxer and the driver she hit came out of the accident unscathed, but it could have been much more serious. Don’t do the Bird Box Challenge while Driving—in fact, if you’re going to blindfold yourself, stay home. The general public will be safer for it.
