Older drivers will likely remember the stylish Eclipse sports coupe that ruled the road before leaving the market for good in 2012. Mitsubishi is reviving the name for a new vehicle, but it isn’t a sports coupe. The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be a small, value-oriented crossover designed to offer drivers the best the industry has to offer.
The Eclipse Cross fits nicely between the existing Outlander Sport and Outlander with a similar wheelbase and 173.4-inch length. The next Outlander Sport is likely to shrink while the standard Outlander will grow, according to Mitsubishi.
The upcoming model features a sleek, attractive design and upscale interior designed to offer a new level of comfort. The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine comes mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission and produces more than the Outlander’s 166 hp. The crossover will also feature the driver’s choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations.
As for technology, the 2018 Eclipse Cross features available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a head-up display, and much more. The crossover will officially go on sale early next year; European markets will see the new vehicle sooner.
Mitsubishi is teaming up with Nissan to develop some cutting edge green technologies. Now that Nissan has a controlling stake in the Mitsubishi Corporation, the company will be using some of the innovative platforms found in Nissan-Renault electric vehicles. This could be the breakthrough many green advocates have been waiting for.
According to CNET, Mitsubishi EV technologies are set to get a boost from some innovative Nissan and Renault designs, including the LEAF and Zoe platforms. These two models come with next-generation technologies, including lithium-ion battery-storage systems, electric motors, and more. When paired with existing Mitsubishi technologies, including the innovative i-MiEV system, the new partnership between Nissan and Mitsubishi is especially promising.
“We welcomed Mitsubishi Motors into the Nissan family, and they already have the Outlander PHEV,” said Takashi Shirawa, head of Nissan European R&D. “The next-generation product range may be shared with that, but this is just the beginning of the discussion as nothing has been decided yet.”
In other words, little is official when it comes to new vehicles and designs. However, we do know that the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is the best-selling PHEV model in Europe, and it’s likely to appear in the US as an exciting new alternative in the crossover segment. We can’t wait to see what happens over the course of the next year or so, especially in terms of green technologies.
Mitsubishi has a line of pickup trucks but none are available in the United States. That’s too bad considering the Japanese automaker recently revealed the latest special edition model. The 2016 Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ packs more safety and convenience features compared to the current line.
The Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ builds on the existing GLX model. Under the hood is a 2.4L turbo diesel engine that produces 178 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode, that engine certainly packs some capability. With a maximum towing capacity around 6,800 lbs (3,100 kg), this truck is more than capable for fulfilling the needs of most drivers.
Safety and driver assist features include seven airbags, emergency stop signal, a speed limited, trailer stability assist, and hill start assist as standard. That builds the GLX’s existing rear camera, 6.1-inch color touchscreen, rear step bumper, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
As for price, the Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ goes for AU$39,490 with an automatic transmission. Opting for the six-speed manual transmission runs in a good deal cheaper with a price tag of AU$36,990. Having undergone a redesign for the 2015 model year, this is a truck we’d be happy to see enter the United States market.
